2x JUNO Winner Steve Marriner Reimagines Genesis’ Hit
2x JUNO Winner Steve Marriner Reimagines Genesis’ “I Can’t Dance” with Grit, Groove, and Blues Swagger
Steve Marriner—multi-instrumentalist, producer, and 2x JUNO Award winner—is putting his signature blues stamp on a classic. His latest single, a raw, soulful take on Genesis’ “I Can’t Dance,” is out now via Cordova Bay Records.
Known for his work with MonkeyJunk and longtime touring with Colin James, Marriner has also collaborated with legends like Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, and Blue Rodeo. Now, he’s flipped a ‘90s pop hit into something swampy, swaggering, and unmistakably his.
“I love a strong chorus, and this one’s got it,” says Marriner. “I always thought the lyric deserved more grit—more swagger. So I gave it some analog grease.”
That grease shows. Marriner trades the polished synths of the original for a deep-pocket groove, smoky guitar lines, and his signature blues grit. It’s not just a cover—it’s a transformation. His worn-in vocals and no-frills arrangement make it sound like the song was always meant to live in a dimly lit bar, somewhere between a jukebox and a bottle of bourbon.
“I Can’t Dance” kicks off a big year for Marriner. His 2021 solo album Hope Dies Last earned a JUNO nomination, and his production work on Big Dave McLean’s This Old Life and David Gogo’s YEAH! has landed him two more nods for the 2025 JUNO Awards. His upcoming full-length Hear My Heart drops in June.
With a career that’s taken him from Massey Hall to The Ryman, Marriner’s evolution as a frontman continues to push the blues forward—loud, loose, and alive.
With “I Can’t Dance,” he turns a pop earworm into a blues burner. Even standing still, it moves.
