OTTAWA, ON — Female-fronted hard rock powerhouse The Space Between are kicking the door open on 2026 with their explosive new single, “Weapon of Choice.” Serving as the lead release from their forthcoming album Dying Sun, the track captures a band operating at full throttle — raw, urgent, and unapologetically alive.

Recorded at the legendary Noble Street Studios, “Weapon of Choice” marks a defining collaboration with acclaimed producer Brian Moncarz (Alice Cooper, The Tea Party). Rejecting digital gloss in favour of vintage tube amps, live-off-the-floor energy, and real drum grit, the band finally achieves what they’ve long been chasing: a recording that mirrors their ferocious live presence.

“We’ve struggled to find a recorded sound that properly captures our energy,” says guitarist James Shaheen. “I think we’ve finally been able to do it with ‘Weapon of Choice.’”

The result is controlled chaos — articulate, syncopated riffs crashing into a locked-in rhythm section while vocalist Maryn Pegan delivers one of her most emotionally charged performances to date.

Lyrically, the song explores the suffocating weight of temptation and self-sabotage — the tension between knowing better and doing worse. Pegan describes the track as a pressure chamber, building steadily until it threatens to rupture:

“I fight myself to stay awake
Who will I choose to disobey?
Temptation game
Just look away.”

It’s an anthem about awareness — and the painful clarity of watching yourself make the wrong choice.

Musically, the band finds its deepest groove yet. Drummer Tom Sergi recalls being determined to build the song around a specific rhythmic pulse, which inspired Shaheen to lean into a Petrucci-influenced attack reminiscent of Dream Theater’s precision-meets-power approach. Meanwhile, Ethan Ryan’s snarling bass lines anchor the track with a muscular undercurrent that gives Pegan’s soaring melodies space to explode.

“This song really felt — and still feels — like a new beginning for us,” Pegan says. “We’ve gone through some big changes over the past few years, and this marks a turning point. Making ‘Weapon of Choice’ brought us back together and kickstarted what we feel is our most fulfilling set of music yet.”

The single acts as a gateway into Dying Sun, an album Pegan describes as a journey through life, death, epiphany, and resurrection. From the existential weight of “Weapon of Choice” to the cathartic release found in later tracks like “Endlessly,” the record reflects a band that has weathered darkness and emerged sharper, heavier, and more cohesive than ever. Additional production support from Rob Cosh and John Rosefield helped refine the band’s evolving sonic identity while preserving its edge.

“This was not an easy album to make,” Shaheen admits. “Sometimes the sun disappears for a while — it’s dark, and it pours rain. But you can’t have the light without the dark. That collective struggle created something really special.”

Since forming in 2022, The Space Between have quickly carved out a place in the Canadian rock conversation. Following their 2023 self-titled EP and breakout track “Your Excuses,” the band earned four Capital Music Award nominations and praise from respected voices including Alan Cross. With “Weapon of Choice,” they close the gap between studio polish and live-wire intensity, proving that their evolution is no accident — it’s earned.
