Azores-born songwriter brings Villains & Chieftains To Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto

TORONTO, ON – Portuguese songwriter and multi-instrumentalist P.S. Lucas has announced his first Canadian tour, with performances scheduled in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto this March.

The Lisbon-based artist will showcase songs from his album Villains & Chieftains, which has steadily built international attention since its release in 2023.

The Canadian run begins March 14 in Montreal at Festival Portugal. From there, Lucas performs March 16 at Casa del Popolo and March 17 at Avant-Garde Bar in Ottawa.

The tour concludes March 19 in Toronto at Lula Lounge, where Lucas will appear as part of the Wavelength Music Festival + Conference 2026.

The Toronto show begins at 7:00 PM, with tickets priced at $34.75. Tickets are available at wavelengthmusic.ca.

A distinctive voice in modern folk songwriting

P.S. Lucas gained early attention with his solo debut In Between (2021). Critics often compared the album to influential singer-songwriters such as Leonard Cohen, Bill Callahan, Nick Drake, and Georges Brassens.

However, his second album Villains & Chieftains (2023) moves deeper into his own musical identity.

The record blends atmospheric folk with subtle jazz textures and storytelling. As a result, the songs feel both intimate and expansive.

Lucas describes the album as music shaped by memory, landscape, and personal reflection.

Songs shaped by island life

Many of the songs on Villains & Chieftains began during a stay on Pico Island in the Azores during the summer of 2020.

Lucas originally planned a short visit. However, the trip lasted far longer than expected. During that time, the world felt suspended and uncertain.

Those emotions shaped the tone of the album.

The project eventually became a three-year collaboration with Portuguese producer Mariana Ricardo, who co-produced the record alongside Lucas.

Together, they shifted the album away from an earlier electronic concept toward a more organic and atmospheric sound.

Collaborating with Portugal’s rising jazz musicians

The album was recorded at Bela-Flor Recording Studios and Estudio Estrela.

Lucas also worked with several of Portugal’s leading young jazz musicians, including:

  • Pedro Branco – lead guitar

  • João Hasselberg – bass

  • João Sousa – drums

  • Augusto Macedo – Fender Rhodes and synthesizers

In addition, backing vocals were provided by Anastacia Carvalho, Manuela Oliveira, and Selma Uamusse.

Stories that bridge past and present

The album features vivid storytelling drawn from personal memories and cultural influences.

For example, the title track “Villain” pays tribute to legendary soul singer Bill Withers.

Meanwhile, “Black Sand” reflects a childhood memory from Faial Island, where Lucas grew up. The song blends an unusual 5/8 rhythm with influences from Balkan music, gospel, and Irish songwriting traditions.

Another track, “Little Lizard,” contrasts the natural beauty of Pico Island with headlines from Portugal’s Banco Espírito Santo financial scandal.

The album closes with Lucas’s interpretation of “Happiness,” written by Molly Drake. The song became a lullaby for his first daughter and now serves as a gentle ending to the record.

A global artist with many influences

P.S. Lucas was born in the Azores, a group of islands located in the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and North America.

Later, he spent several years living in Copenhagen before returning to Lisbon, which he now calls home.

Earlier in his career, Lucas led an experimental electro-folklore project and later formed a critically praised duo that released a trilogy of albums between 2015 and 2018.

Today, his solo performances combine fingerstyle guitar, electronic sound processing, and bilingual songwriting.

A key performance at Wavelength Music Festival

Lucas’s March 19 Toronto performance will take place during the Wavelength Music Festival + Conference 2026.

The festival runs March 19–21 and features more than 30 artists from Canada and around the world.

Events will take place across several Toronto venues, including:
