Whiskey Jack Releases New Single “O L D” – A Whimsical Ode to Aging

Whiskey-Jack-Old Whiskey Jack Releases New Single "O L D" – A Whimsical Ode to AgingToronto, ON – Whiskey Jack, the legendary Canadian roots band known for its timeless sound and wit, has unveiled their latest single, “O L D,” a humorous and heartfelt track inspired by the challenges of getting older. The song is a playful reflection on the everyday struggles of aging, from forgetting keys to navigating doctor appointments, all set to a catchy, toe-tapping melody.

“O L D” was born in early 2024 when Whiskey Jack’s singer and guitarist, Douglas John Cameron, had a light-hearted conversation with his longtime friend Steve Hunter. After a brief moment of forgetfulness, Hunter jokingly remarked, “It looks like you’ve got the O L D.” This sparked the creative inspiration for the track, which Cameron describes as writing itself. “I just wrote about everything that was happening around me at the time – losing keys, doctor appointments, and pickleball,” he says.

The song features Cameron on guitar and vocals, with Duncan Fremlin lending his vocals and Steve Hunter playing piano. A blend of folk, humor, and reflection, “O L D” channels the styles of John Prine, Lyle Lovett, and Leon Redbone, delivering both comical insights and relatable truths. The track was composed, produced, and written by Cameron, a two-time JUNO Award nominee.

The band first performed “O L D” live at a Royal Canadian Legion show in April 2024. The enthusiastic response, from both younger and older audiences alike, confirmed the song’s universal appeal. “It’s become our signature song,” says Cameron. “The reactions are always the same—young people say, ‘My dad would love that,’ while older audiences connect with the lyrics on a deeply personal level.”

Whiskey Jack, who have been active for nearly 50 years, are known for their rich history and deep ties to Canadian country music. The band has recorded numerous albums since their debut in 1979 and was honored by the late Stompin’ Tom Connors, who made them part of his studio and touring band for nearly 25 years. Their most recent album, Whiskey Jack 10 (Do It Again), was released in 2023.

As the band looks ahead to a new TV project with Legends of Canadian Country Music and continues to tour, “O L D” is poised to be a hit, with its humor and catchy rhythm resonating with fans across generations.
